November 4, 2018 – Myra presents at a Second Generation Symposium during Holocaust Education Week in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Myra presented at a Second Generation symposium at the Neuberger Holocaust Education Week on the topic of Recovering from Genocidal Trauma. As a social worker and daughter of Auschwitz survivors, Myra talked about her family history and life’s work with Holocaust survivors. Using a strengths-based philosophy that acknowledges survivors’ internal strengths, coping abilities, and achievements, despite their traumatic experiences, she has developed innovative programs that empower them to recover from genocidal trauma.
Myra facilitated a sharing session with thirty-six 2Gs on the topic of Positive Aspects: Transmission of Our Parents’ Legacy. She believes that the process of coming to terms with our parents and their past experiences is not about blaming and/or judging them. It’s about understanding the impact of their experiences on our own lives and getting in touch with our thoughts and feelings about it. Emotions are honored when they are appropriately expressed, processed, and then released. The release of these feelings allows for a more living encounter with ourselves and others.
