Lighting a Chanukah Candle
The celebration of Chanukah is especially meaningful this year, bridging the gap between past and present. Chanukah tells the story of resilience, whereby the brave Maccabees defeated the Greek-Syrian armies. It marks a crucial chapter in Jewish history as they reclaimed their land and kindled a flame that still burns brightly today.
This narrative of miracles, accomplishments and inspiration resonates deeply today within the people of Israel and Jewish people around the world. This was obvious to me when I saw a photo of an Israeli soldier leaving for Gaza with a Chanukiah strapped on his army backpack. This soldier was gaining strength, courage and inspiration from the biblical story of Chanukah, linking past and present.
Of light that confronts and transcends darkness and evil
Of determination and perseverance over pessimism
Of courage over fear
Of hope over despair
And most of all, pride in our Jewish identity
Together, let’s cast a collective glow that illuminates our world with hope, strength, truth and determination, dispelling darkness wherever it crosses our path. Let us join our brothers and sisters in Israel this Chanukah and as we light the lights, let us pray for peace, Israel’s security, the safe return of the hostages and the eradication of global anti-Semitism.
